The Church - Part II

Frank Viola, in his book: "Reimagining Church" writes:

"The Greek word for church is ekklesia, and it literally means "assembly."  This meshes nicely with the dominant thought in Paul's letters that the church is Christ in corporate expression (1 Cor. 12:1-27; Eph. 1:22-23; 4:1-16).
From the human perspective, the purpose of the church meeting is mutual edification.  But from God's perspective, the purpose of the gathering is to express His glorious Son and make Him visible. (The church is the body, and Christ is the Head.  The purpose of one's body is to express the life that's within it.)
Put another way, we gather together so that the Lord Jesus can manifest Himself in His fullness.  And when that happens, the body is edified.
Note that the only way that Christ can be properly expressed is if every member of a church freely supplies that aspect of the Lord that he or she has received.  Make no mistake abouth it: The Lord Jesus cannot be fully disclosed through only one member.  He is far too rich for that (Eph. 3:8).
So if the hand doesn't function in the gathering, Christ will not be manifested in fullness.  Likewise, if the eyes fail to function, the Lord will be limited in His self-revelation.  On the other hand, when every member of a local assembly functions in the meeting, Christ is seen.  He is made visible.  And why?  Because He is assembled in our midst.
Consider the analogy of a puzzle.  When each puzzle piece is properly positioned in relation to the other pieces, the puzzle is assembled.  The net effect?  We see the entire picture.  It's the same way with Christ and His church.
The highest purpose of the church meeting, then, is to make the invisible Christ visible through His body.  Put another way, we gather together to reassemble the Lord Jesus Christ on earth.  When this happens, not only is Christ glorified in His saints, and not only is each member edified, but something is also registered in unseen realms: Pricipalities and powers in heavenly places are shamed!
Paul tells us that the manifold wisdom of God is made known through the church to the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places.  Through open-participatory meetings, the church demonstrates to other realms that Jesus Christ - the embodiment of God's wisdom - is alive enough to lead a fallen race who once belonged to God's enemy.  This brings great glory to God.  And it's a central aspect of His eternal purpose."

Did you know that God never intended for man to build Him a physical house...a temple?

Acts 7:48-51
New Living Translation (NLT)
48 However, the Most High doesn’t live in temples made by human hands. As the prophet says,  49 ‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
Could you build me a temple as good as that?’
      asks the Lord.
‘Could you build me such a resting place?
50 Didn’t my hands make both heaven and earth?’[a]
51 “You stubborn people! You are heathen[b] at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you!
Footnotes:
  1. Acts 7:50 Isa 66:1-2.
  2. Acts 7:51 Greek uncircumcised.
It was a concession He made on behalf of King David.  Instead, he is building a spiritual temple, a city on a hill, made not with bricks and mortar...

1 Peter 2:4-5

Living Stones for God’s House
4 You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor.  5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests.Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.

Paul too, conveys this message:

Ephesians 2:19-22

A Temple for the Lord
19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. 20 Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. 21 We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. 22 Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.
Again, to the church in Corinth, he writes:

1 Corinthians 3:12-23

New Living Translation (NLT)
12 Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. 15 But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.
16 Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in[a] you? 17 God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
18 Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say,
   “He traps the wise
in the snare of their own cleverness.”[b]
 20 And again,
   “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise;
      he knows they are worthless.”[c]
21 So don’t boast about following a particular human leader. For everything belongs to you—22 whether Paul or Apollos or Peter,[d] or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

 But man continues, until today, trying to rebuild what Jesus told us would be torn down;

Luke 21:5-6

Jesus Foretells the Future
5 Some of his disciples began talking about the majestic stonework of the Temple and the memorial decorations on the walls. But Jesus said, 6 “The time is coming when all these things will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!”
So what is the model of church that we should be following:

Acts 2:42-47

The Believers Form a Community
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper[a]), and to prayer.  43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity[b]47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Paul’s Final Greetings
19 The churches here in the province of Asia send greetings in the Lord, as do Aquila and Priscilla and all the others who gather in their home for church meetings. 20 All the brothers and sisters here send greetings to you. Greet each other with Christian love. (See also Romans 16)

Colossians 4:15-16

15 Please give my greetings to our brothers and sisters[a] at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church that meets in her house.  16 After you have read this letter, pass it on to the church at Laodicea so they can read it, too. And you should read the letter I wrote to them.

Instead, there is an institutional church on almost every corner...since we can't figure out how to all get along...

1 Corinthians 1:10-17

Divisions in the Church
10 I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters,[a] by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose. 11 For some members of Chloe’s household have told me about your quarrels, my dear brothers and sisters. 12 Some of you are saying, “I am a follower of Paul.” Others are saying, “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Peter,[b]” or “I follow only Christ.”  13 Has Christ been divided into factions? Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Were any of you baptized in the name of Paul? Of course not! 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 for now no one can say they were baptized in my name. 16 (Oh yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas, but I don’t remember baptizing anyone else.) 17 For Christ didn’t send me to baptize, but to preach the Good News—and not with clever speech, for fear that the cross of Christ would lose its power.

So if the building is not the church... what should we do??  What is our reasonable response?

James 1:27

27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

Matthew 25:31-46

The Final Judgment
31 “But when the Son of Man[a] comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. 32 All the nations[b] will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.  34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[c] you were doing it to me!’
41 “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons.[d] 42 For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’
44 “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’
45 “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’
46 “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”

For not everyone who calls themselves a "Christian" is...

Matthew 7:21-23

True Disciples
21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’
So how can we be sure??

1 John 2:3-8

3 And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. 4 If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. 5 But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. 6 Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

[And what does Jesus command us to do?

Matthew 22:37-39

37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’]
[Back to 1 John...]

A New Commandment
7 Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before. 8 Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment, and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.
Again...

John 13:35

35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

And what does that look like?  Well, that's your homework; read, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
